Racial Overtones on Critics' List

It did not surprise me that no African-American eateries were included in this year's critics' choices. Each year, they are shunned for some eclectic restaurant that is in the Fan. It is not the quality or the menu that is not to your liking, it is the racial overtones.

Richmond has never evolved from its position as a segregated city. The critics are probably "old Richmond" with ties to that same segregated mentality. When will Richmond come out of the dark ages of racial distinction?

As a very proud black man, I resent the total disregard that you have for the black restaurants here in this city. I have read some of your reviews during the year and each time you review an African-American establishment, there is always some flaw in the food or the service. I have eaten in some of the restaurants, which you rave about and rate so highly, and they are not good at all. Why can't you bring yourself to being fair?

Be honest, your reviews are biased to the white clientele.

Editors' note: Our critics are happy to share among their "Favorite 52" restaurants from a diverse array of local dining options, including Vietnamese, French, Indian, Japanese, Cuban, Italian and more — including the soul-food restaurant Croaker's Spot, which appeared on the "Favorite 52.". Also of note, the dessert on the cover of this issue is a creation of the pastry chef Juana Straus, who is African-American. We encourage readers to share their favorite places with us at shortorder@styleweekly.com.
