Planning Begins for Gilpin Court Redevelopment
by Amy BiegelsenThe Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority sits at a crossroads as its chairman steps down and it launches public hearings on a planned overhaul of Gilpin Court, the city's largest public housing project.
Brian Jackson, a vice president and general counsel at Ukrop's Super Markets and a member of Virginia Commonwealth University's Board of Visitors, served on the authority's real estate committee for the last five years and was chairman of its board for the last two.
His announcement comes as the housing authority begins public workshops regarding the redevelopment of Gilpin Court. The meetings, similar to those convened for the downtown master plan, are planned for Oct. 28 and Oct. 29 from 6-8 p.m. at the Calhoun Family Investment Center, 436 Calhoun St. A presentation will follow on Oct. 30.
The authority has contracted Boston-based ICON architects to redesign Gilpin and Frederic A. Fay Towers, a housing complex for senior citizens, next door. Although the workshops begin this week, construction isn't expected to begin until March 2012.
