The jam-band, funk electronica of Particle is classic rock for people who grew up listening to Puddle of Mud. Similar to the genre mashing of contemporaries Disco Biscuits, Big Something and Sound Tribe Sector 9, the Los Angeles quartet blends live and sequenced sounds to create their shakedown streets. With a premium on live experimentation, the songs are vehicles to be interpreted in the moment. The loose, vaguely prog -rock approach they employ invokes a jazz-free fusion of established groove sensibilities to get the party started. They bring their electric Red Bull acid tests to the Canal Club on Friday. Opening the show are Richmond purveyors of funk Mekong Xpress and the Get Fresh Horns and DJs Phil Dice and Agent on the ones and twos. Doors open at 8 p.m. Admission is $10-$15. thecanalclub.com.
