No Richmond at Strange Matter

Saturday, Sept. 14. 10 p.m.

Nostalgia is a seductive liar, as the seventh ambassador to the United Nations, George Ball, once said. That it is. There’s an inherent danger in romanticizing the past, especially when it comes to music, because what’s happening now is infinitely more interesting than what’s already been. That said, No Richmond — the post-punk dance parties thrown by WRIR DJ Michael Murphy — aren’t cheap trips down memory lane. While Murphy and his fellow DJs play hits and obscurities from that golden era of aggro dance (roughly 1978-’83), the music still resonates in today’s culture with the here and now sounds of Daft Punk, Death Grips, the Savages and other bands that continue to draw inspiration from the generation that ripped it up and started all over again. This is a night of classics for those who had records by the Gang of Four, Public Image LTD and Bush Tetras on their turntables and a history lesson for those who grew up with the MP3. Both young and old can come together to bust a move under the post-punk banner of ‘fuck art, let’s dance.’ No Richmond takes place Saturday, Sept. 14, at Strange Matter. Doors open at 10 p.m. Admission is free. strangematterrva.com. — Chris Bopst
