Niya at the Saving Lives Festival

With role models like Lil Kim, Foxy Brown and Riskay, responsible parents might not want their daughters to grow up to be rappers. Caroline County's Niya, however, is starting her career with songs parents can understand and a style kids will find familiar. The 15-year-old, who dances as well, takes her cues from R&B artists such as Aaliyah and Ciara, rather than raunchy rap counterparts. It seems the teenager is already making wise career decisions. Niya performs at the Saving Lives Festival at the Science Museum of Virginia Saturday, Sept. 6. The festival begins at 11 a.m. and also features Tiaja Brennen, local marching bands and a fashion show. $8. 359-9375.
