MUSIC: Inside Track
Classic metal-heads Bullistic release their new CD, "The Chronicles of Love and Hate," Aug. 30 through Backstreet Records based in Mechanicsville. The release was mastered by Roger Lian, who worked with Pantera, U2 and Faith Hill at Masterdisk in New York City. Bullistic plans to celebrate the CD with a show at the Canal Club Aug. 13. Have a band? Want to play in front of a crowd? How about coming out and supporting local music? The Canal Club holds a free all-ages show every Friday with three local rock bands. Called "Community Service," the show is named after the Y101 show. www.thecanalclub.com.
Speaking of local radio shows, that's where you can catch all the bands we ever mention and more. The longest running is our own Jay Smack's "Studio B" on 102 the X, Sunday nights at 9. Y101 does its "Community Service" thing (see above) also on Sundays, but a little earlier, at 7 p.m. You can hear local music throughout the schedule on WRIR 97.3-FM, but Scott Burger hosts "Locals Only" Saturdays from 5 to 7 p.m. with plenty of old and new local music and timely interviews.
Richmond's experimental indie-rock foursome known as Vega celebrated its CD release party at Alley Katz in July. Although the night was hot and steamy, Vega survived nearly an hour on stage playing through the haze. Fortunately, the band sounded much better than the guy next to us smelled, and it offered a great deal on its new disc at only $5 a pop. Curious fans can get a preview of Vega's new self-titled disc at www.myspace.com/vega.
Also, Jason and the Vacations celebrated the release of their debut, self-titled disc July 15 at Out of Bounds. If you like Urge Overkill, you'll like Jason and the Vacations. Give it a listen at www.myspace.com/jason andthevacations.
From the look of their press kit and Web site, the guys in Tulsa Drone seem way smarter than we are. Whether you call them avant-country or Ameri-prog, the Drone is catching on in living rooms, galleries and venues across the country. The band's also working meticulously on a new CD, tentatively titled "Songs From a Mean Season," which is being engineered at Altamont Studio by Scott Minor of Sparklehorse fame. You'll have to wait until September to see Tulsa live, but you can catch a few tunes at www.tulsadrone.com.
