Despite the pluralized moniker, the Mountain Goats are more or less the musical undertaking of singer and songwriter John Darnielle, who after spending the greater part of the '90s releasing cassette recordings solo, has worked with a variety of side members and collaborators through the years. Often using nothing more than an acoustic guitar, some beat-keeping bass and drums, and lo-fi hiss, Darnielle is at his best with a narrative, delivering the kind of prolific slice-of-life vignettes that introduce listeners to all kinds of odd and extraordinary characters. With the release of band's forthcoming album, “All Eternals Deck,” the Mountain Goats are scheduled to perform at the National on Thursday, March 24, at 7 p.m. $13-$15.
