Before basking in the unofficial start of summer this Memorial Day weekend, remember the reason for the holiday: If not for the sacrifices of the men and women who died in service to the country, we all might be under the rule of an inbred monarchy or speaking German. The Virginia War Memorial honors the nation’s veterans with a memorial concert Monday at 2 p.m. The Thomas Jefferson Cadet Corps Alumni Band and Friends will honor the 81 alumni from Thomas Jefferson High School who lost their lives in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Two were posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. Before the concert, Virginia’s official commemoration of the national holiday will take place from 10-11 a.m., co-hosted by the American Legion.
