After 18 months on the market, the Westmoreland Place estate (above) of the late Mary Tyler Freeman Cheek McClenahan (inset) has a buyer.

Local real estate agent Stanton Thalhimer confirms that someone has agreed to buy the 10,000-square-foot stone mansion on Pocahontas Avenue, but declines to say who or for how much. The deal won't close until sometime in December, he says.

One source puts the purchase price at $3.5 million, well below the original spring 2005 $5 million asking price. The price had dipped to $3.9 million after a year on the market. The city assesses the property's value at $2.7 million.

"It took about as long as we expected," says Thalhimer, an agent with Re/Max Commonwealth in Richmond. "With a property of this size, they don't sell overnight. I wish they did."

McClenahan, who died in 2005, was the daughter of historian, editor and Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer of George Washington and Robert E. Lee, Douglas Southall Freeman. Architect W. Duncan Lee designed the mansion, which sits on two acres, in 1919. The grounds feature sculpted gardens, fountains, a swimming pool, a tennis court and a greenhouse. S
