There's no secret that the hip-hop industry is a boys' club. But it wasn't always that way. There was a time when rappers who happened to be female were commonplace and created art as compelling as their male counterparts. is from this era. Fearless and feisty, Lyte didn't cater to male fantasies ("Paper Thin") or hesitate to keep another MC in check ("10% Dis"). Lyte, who's enjoyed a successful career as an actress and voice-over artist, joins other artists from hip-hop's golden era (Doug E. Fresh, KRS-1) at the second annual "80's Was the Greatest" concert at Brown's Island. E.U. and DJ Kool are also on the bill. The show starts Brown's Island Friday, July 18, at 6:30 p.m. $15-$40. 646-0546.
