Matuto and La Subrosa Sabrosura at Balliceaux

Nov. 13 and 14. 9:30 p.m.

On two consecutive nights, two bands with proven ability to charm huge crowds at international music festivals will squeeze into the more intimate confines of Balliceaux. The third visit of Brazil-to-Brooklyn powerhouse Matuto and the first of Mexican cumbia-funk-reggae-electronica hybrid La Subrosa Sabrosura (“the tasty deliciousness”) make this the best local week for world music since the Richmond Folk Festival. Matuto’s previous appearance here was one of last year’s most winning performances. The band is co-led by genre-bending guitar wizard Clay Ross and Folk Festival veteran accordionist Rob Curto. It’s coming off a multicontinent tour, with a new CD (“The Devil and the Diamond”) and undiminished enthusiasm. La Subrosa Sabrosura promises a whirlwind, percussion-driven blend of tradition and innovation set to a Columbian cumbia beat. Neither of these bands is designed for passive participation. They may provide a rewarding listening experience, but come prepared to dance. La Subrosa Sabrosura plays Balliceux on Nov. 13 at 9:30 p.m., free. Matuto plays Nov. 14 at 9:30 p.m., $7 admission. balliceauxrva.com.
