Matt Butcher at the Camel

If one were so inclined, it would be very easy to draw some substantial comparisons between singers and songwriters Ryan Adams and Matt Butcher. Besides that both musical artists find support in their alt-country performances with the help of well-matched backing bands —Adams has the Cardinals; Butcher has the Revolvers — the 26-year-old Butcher has a keen knack for tapping into the earnestness of country-infused folk melodies, using just the right amount of arranged horns, piano, pedal steel and an accessible harmonica. For all their similarities, with Butcher acknowledging in a past interview that: “I certainly don't think I'm reinventing the wheel. I'm just trying to keep it spinning,” Butcher's troubadour Americana establishes its own special niche in the genre. With tunes such as “Giving My Sadness a Name” and “Grey Skies Green Shoes” off his debut record, “Me and My Friends,” Butcher performs at the Camel on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 8 p.m. 353-4901. - Mike Hilleary
