Mates of State at the National

Whoever thinks having a successful career gets in the way of being a great parent clearly hasn't met Kori Gardner and her husband, Jason Hammel, the musical duo more commonly known as Mates of State. In between their upbeat pop performances, blending their male-female vocal harmonies with quirky percussive rhythms and electronic keyboards, the touring couple are busy spending the rest of their days reading bedtime stories and giving baths to their two little girls who travel with them while they're on the road. With green rooms stocked with baby food, the coolest parents of indie rock play the National with Black Kids on Thursday, April 2, at 7 p.m. $16-$19. 612-1900 or www.thenationalva.com. -- Mike Hilleary
