Originally scheduled to play Richmond back in October, the husband-and-wife team of Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel — more commonly known as Mates of State — got the opportunity to perform on the “Late Show with David Letterman” and canceled its Richmond gig at the last minute. It bummed out some local fans, but the band repeatedly promised to make it up to them. The duo has been entertaining audiences with nonstop danceable songs and elaborate stage setups for more than a decade. Their seventh album, “Mountaintops,” takes the band to a new level by adding more exotic instruments and complex arrangements to its drums and electric organ. The sound evokes a sense of pop nostalgia and general all-around fun, and live shows always are over the top. Mates of State performs at Canal Club on Monday, Feb. 20, at 8 p.m. $15. 643-2582.
