The husband-and-wife team of Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel, more commonly known as Mates of State, has been entertaining fans for more than a decade. With the release of the couple’s seventh album, “Mountaintops,” this month, its popularity continues to grow. The band began by using drums and an electric organ, but since has moved on to more exotic instruments and complex arrangements. The sound evokes a sense of pop nostalgia and general all-around fun, and live shows are always over the top. Last time the two played Richmond, they turned the National into a veritable circus, with nonstop danceable songs and elaborate stage setups. Mates of State perform at Canal Club on Monday, Oct. 10, at 8 p.m. $15. 643-2582.
