Before spending his days in fat suits and trading profanity-filled quips and action sequences with Will Smith, Martin Lawrence started his career as a successful stand-up comic, delivering a brash, filterless take on black culture, an act that made him the perfect fit when Russell Simmons asked him to host the controversial and career-launching comedy series, “Def Comedy Jam.” Eventually landing more mainstream success thanks to creating and starring in the sitcom “Martin,” a show that would become one of the highest-rated shows of the mid-1990s, Lawrence has since starred in a number of high-grossing motion pictures. Returning to his stand-up roots, Martin Lawrence is scheduled to perform at the Landmark Theater as part of his “Doin’ Time Comedy Tour” on Thursday, June 16, at 8 p.m. $55-$75. 800-745-3000.
