Mariza at Modlin Center for the Arts

Fado is a Portuguese-traced musical genre that pretty much looks at the glass as always being half empty. Touching on themes such as the betrayal of love and death, producing mournful melodies of fatalistic despair is the stale bread and rancid butter of its practitioners. But that's kind of the point. For all of its sadness and tragedy, it's also a soulfully beautiful form of music, one made all the more moving when the voice of someone such as Mariza puts herself behind the accompaniment of a composition's classical guitar. Giving these dramatic ballads a modern stylization, Mariza plays the University of Richmond's Modlin Center for the Arts on Wednesday, April 1, at 7:30 p.m. $8-$36. 289-8980. -- Mike Hilleary
