Light Invite
Thank you for Ginger Levit's excellent article about “Tiffany: Color and Light,” on display at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts this summer (“Entrepreneur of Elegance,” Arts & Culture, June 9). Your readers (especially fans of Louis C. Tiffany) may also be interested to know that they can experience one of the largest permanent exhibits of Tiffany's work in town, any day of the week, and it's free!
St. Paul's Episcopal Church, in the heart of the city by Capitol Square, is blessed with a very fine collection of works from the Tiffany studios, including 10 stained-glass memorial windows and an altar mosaic. The windows, which are simply stunning, have been featured in various publications and are often recommended by museum docents, as well as tour guides at the Virginia Capitol.
The newly reopened VMFA with its special exhibitions benefits our community in many ways. One of the most exciting aspects of this prominent Tiffany exhibit is the opportunity to generate renewed interest in and enthusiasm for local landmarks and houses of worship that feature Tiffany throughout our city.
Style Weekly readers are invited to join us Sunday mornings when volunteer guides offer free tours of the church, highlighting the Tiffany windows, after the 10 a.m. service. Also, the church is open daily, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., to visitors and those seeking a quiet space for prayer and reflection.
Of course St. Paul's is a church, not a museum. The church is beautiful, as is the light that streams through the Tiffany windows every morning, but the people within are what make it shine. Whatever brings you downtown — prayer, work, history, or, yes, Tiffany — your visit is welcome any day of the week.
