Les Rhinocéros are scientist rock. A truly 21st-century band, the Washington trio examines sound with Galileo’s sense of inquiry. There’s a distinct heliocentric quality to the work in that the group’s mathematical models prove their aural theories. Drawing from the probing explorations of This Heat, Can, Sun Ra and King Tubby, Les Rhinocéros’ landscapes revolve around a central theme that all sounds are connected. And though it may sound like a stuffy erudite pursuit, it isn’t -- the group never forsakes the rock in its assimilations of the abstract. Les Rhinocéros bring their audio aestheticism to Strange Matter on Saturday, March 15. LawSuits, Dyrt, Rooted Ear and Brown Piss open. Doors open at 9 p.m. Tickets are $6. strangematterrva.com.
