This Savannah, Ga.-based outfit exhibit many traits that are regularly associated with metal rockers: sludgy riffs, drop-tuned guitars, and foreboding vocal growls and shouts. Here the familiarity begins to wane however, in large part because the group features dueling drummers and three separate vocalists, including female guitarist Laura Pleasants. Throwing in elements of layered space rock, punk and psychedelic music, Kylesa — a name taken from the phrase "kilesa mara," a term in Buddhist teachings referring to demons of defilement and delusion — is one of the more progressive acts of the metal genre working today. Recently touring as openers for Mastodon, Kylesa performs at Strange Matter on Thursday, May 26, at 7 p.m. $12-$14.
