Kings of Hollywood at the National

Saturday, July 5. 7 p.m.

The 1980s were a horrific time in popular music. A trip back to that bland, soulless error in mainstream melodic expression is why nostalgia — in my ever-so-precious opinion — is the folly of fools. On Saturday, July 5, the National is host to Kings of Hollywood, a night of Reagan-era hair metal tribute acts paying homage to Guns N’ Roses (Appetite for Destruction), Motley Crue (Red White and Crue) and Poison (Poison’d). Those bands represented the absolute worst in vapid, corporate-approved-and-enabled idiot rebellion. But to be fair, their shallowest-end-of-the pool exploits offered a welcomed reprieve from harsh trickle-down realities of the time. If you like that music, that’s all that matters, and I’ll say that these cover bands do a stellar job recreating the hedonistic exploits that made these groups household names. Doors open at 7 p.m. Admission is $12.50. thenationalva.com.
