Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson at the National

Jethro Tull has always been considered something of a black sheep in the context of popular music and rock 'n' roll. Initially conceived as a traditionalist blues-rock group in the late '60s, frontman Ian Anderson led the band into more progressive territory, implementing an acoustic-electric pairing of folk melodies, classical orchestration, jazz and arena rock. When he wasn't playing the role of Pied Piper, playing flute interludes with reckless abandon, Anderson used his lyrical approach to delve deep into sage imagery, confronting faith, God and everything in between with dense metaphors. The leader of one of the world's best-selling musical groups — responsible for its magnum opus, “Aqualung,” and beloved concept album, “Thick as a Brick” (featuring one song lasting nearly 45 minutes) — Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson is scheduled to play the National on Sunday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m. $38. 612-1900. — Mike Hilleary
