Jen Johnson grew up in Newton, N.C. She moved to Richmond in 2002 to attend Virginia Commonwealth University, earning a bachelor's degree in English with a minor in women's studies. The 26-year-old lives in Church Hill with a roommate and two dogs, managing the Books-A-Million in Colonial Heights. A daily writer who moves between poetry, journaling and short stories, Johnson is most fascinated by the terrain covered in “Dawn” — the relationships between people. Judge Brandon Reynolds writes: “There's a peculiar animalistic quality to any intimate relationship in which people share beds and bathrooms. Here that savagery is given a literal treatment, like watching a nature show in which the animals' lives revolve around mating, killing and gardening.”
