Tim Barry has hopped trains, toured the world and sung in stadiums, but after cheating death, Avail's famous frontman seeks simplicity — in a shed behind his girlfriend's house. Our cover story profiled the well-known musician.

Photographer's note: It was a cold, snowy day when I went to Tim's small one-room house. I had no plan, I just wanted to catch up with the musician. Growing up in Richmond I'd seen him through all the stages of his career. I walked in the door, which was wide open, and Tim stood there staring out the one window. I grabbed that shot, he turned smiled, and said “Ah, man, paparazzi.”
