when: Richmond Collections
A multidimensional exhibit opening Friday, June 6 at the Valentine Richmond History Center features objects as diverse as a crazy quilt made of Confederate relics to George Washington’s cane.
The new “Discovering Collections, Making Connections” exhibit illustrates Richmond’s cultural history by revealing the stories behind the center’s century-old collection of objects and artifacts.
A “What is It?” area will challenge visitors to identify unusual objects, and a “Superlative” display features categories such as the largest, smallest and oddest sets of objects. Another area explores 20th-century African-American history in Richmond. Objects related to Richmond philanthropist Thomas Cannon, St. Phillip’s Hospital and fraternal organizations and clothing ranging from debutante dresses to maid’s uniforms are among the artifacts that help explain Richmond’s cultural history.
Visitors will get information about how to use the center’s archives to research people, buildings and the Civil War.
The Valentine History Center also offers hourly tours of the Wickham House, breakfast and lunch in the garden café and a gift shop.
