Who: Jaye Erickson of La Diff
For the last eight years, Jaye Erickson of LaDiff has helped Richmonders develop a contemporary focus on design. The interior designer, who works with individual clients as well as playing a role on LaDiff's buying team, believes that form definitely follows function. Drawn to the uncluttered, clean lines promoted by midcentury modern designers like Aalto, Corbusier and Breuer, Erickson regularly scouts the furniture and accessories markets with the LaDiff buying team for interesting pieces designed with a modern aesthetic. "I get a thousand ideas from every market," says the designer, "you're exposed to so many new and different things, each experience broadens your scope of thought a little further."
As Erickson's reputation for designing creative, contemporary, yet personal, spaces has grown, she's also been recognized as someone who's not afraid to roll up her sleeves and pick up a paintbrush.
She has faux painted walls, whimsical murals and furnishings for clients, and is always experimenting with new techniques in her own home. "For me, design is a hands-on process that allows me to express my vision for a space." Erickson is currently creating a custom-designed glass floor-collage for one of her clients.
Jaye Erickson can be reached at LaDifférence International Home Furnishings, 14th and Dock Streets in Richmond, 648-6210.
Hanover Tavern hosts tour to share three centuries of history
From 1798 to 1911, Hanover Tavern doubled as a post office. Not surprisingly, there was never a shortage of postal workers. At Hanover Tavern, it was the mail that brought people through the door. But the hospitality and beverages kept them there. Over the course of 205 years, Hanover Tavern has served the community as an inn, restaurant, tap room, stage coach stop, theatre, post office and gathering place.
Tours of Hanover Tavern will be led on Sunday February 16 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Sarah Y. Smith, Executive Director of Hanover Tavern Foundation, will share the rich history of this late 18th century site in a guided architectural tour. Hanover Tavern is located on route 301 in Hanover, Virginia. Donations of $3 are welcome. Please call for reservations and directions, (804) 537-5050.
Hanover Tavern Foundation was founded in 1990 to save historic Hanover Tavern. The Foundation has raised 1.9 million to date during the "Hanover Tavern-A Future Worthy of Its Past" to complete renovations to the structure. When renovations are complete, the Tavern will once again be used as an historic education, community and cultural resource center.
For more information, call the tavern at (804) 537-5050 or visit the website at www.hanovertavern.org.
