Home Front: Mail Call of the Manatee

Shawn Dolan is a devoted Jimmy Buffet fan, so after decades of exhorting his legion of Parrot Heads to help save the manatees, Dolan rescued one from Key Largo, Fla. Sort of. Dolan's manatee sculpture does double duty as his mailbox. Not everyone loves it as much as he does, though. Neighborhood kids started throwing bottles at the poor beast, then graduated to bricks and now cinder blocks, he says. For Halloween, Dolan's wife dressed-up the manatee with a cowboy hat, bandana and a pistol. "There's a new sheriff in town," Dolan says, laughing.
