Home Front: Herbs Galore

Since most perennial herbs -- such as rosemary, oregano and lavender — can go in the ground by April 15, it's not too soon to start plotting out your garden and deciding how to spice up your catch of the day or grilled veggies. In its fifth season, A Thyme to Plant, the wholesale business for Lavender Fields Farm that offers 220 varieties of herbs, is one of the largest herb farms in the area. Choose from 20-odd varieties of basil, 25-30 varieties of thyme and a large selection of mostly culinary sages. "Basil can go in [the ground] the week after the show, typically we say Mother's Day," says Nicole Schermerhorn, owner of A Thyme to Plant, 11300 Winfrey Road in Glen Allen, 262-3386.
A Thyme to Plant is one of this year's featured growers at Maymont's Herbs Galore and More. Meet 40 regional vendors on April 26 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on the Carriage House Lawn. In addition to fresh, yummy food, you can find great selections of herbs, perennials, annuals and garden accessories. All proceeds benefit Maymont.
