Soothe your soul and delight your stomach with a field trip to the country.

In its second season, the Goochland Farmers' Market will begin offering fresh fruits and vegetables, prepared foods and sustainably produced arts and crafts. Artisan demonstrations, music and farm animals also will be present to entertain visitors. Open Saturdays, May 5 to Oct. 27, 8 a.m. to noon. Grace Episcopal Church, 2955 River Road West (Routes 6 and 522). (804) 332-3144.

If you're a grow-your-own type, visit Lavender Fields Farm, above, in Glen Allen for inspiration. Classes in herb gardening and cooking are offered nearly every day for $5. The farm also sells garden accessories, pots, plants, seeds and potted herbs. Open Tuesdays through Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 11300 Winfrey Road, Glen Allen. (804) 262-7167.

Wholesome foods abound at Brookview Farm in Manakin-Sabot, an organic farm that welcomes Saturday visitors. This time of year, look for grass-fed beef, whole-wheat flour, natural dog food, dog bones and especially free-range eggs -- there's nothin' like 'em. 854 Dover Road, Manakin-Sabot. (804) 784-3131.
