Former City Councilwoman registers to vote in Thomasville, N.C.
Richmond may not have Jackie M. Jackson to kick around anymore.
The former Richmond School Board member and city councilwoman confirms that she's packed her bags and headed home to her native North Carolina. “I'm no longer in Richmond,” Jackson says. “I have relocated.”
During the past few years Jackson did a lot of moving in her constant quest for votes. After losing her City Council seat to 8th District political rival Reva Trammell in 2005, Jackson moved to Henrico County. There, she ran unsuccessfully in a five-way Democratic primary race for the seat from the 74th House of Delegates District. Delegate Joe Morrissey eventually won the seat.
Next, it was back to the city, where she became the first to officially throw her hat into the ring for Richmond mayor. After she withdrew from the race, there were brief rumblings that she might eye Mayor Dwight C. Jones' vacated House of Delegates seat.
Jackson failed to emerge as a contender to replace Jones in the General Assembly. But she was far from gone.
Most recently, she re-emerged as campaign manager for Carlos Brown, who lost twice in General Assembly races, first in a contest to replace Jones in the 70th District and then in the Democratic primary earlier this month against School Board member Betsy Carr to succeed Delegate Frank Hall.
Previously Jackson worked successfully to elect Tom Perriello, who unseated entrenched but often controversial Republican Virgil Goode from the U.S. House of Representatives.
Jackson isn't ruling out a return to Richmond, saying she plans to maintain her political consulting business, JMJ Strategic Resources, based here.
But the registrar's office in Thomasville, N.C., confirms that Jackson registered to vote June 15, and there rumblings that she may mount a run for city council there. The filing deadline to run for council in Thomasville is July 6.
Jackson called that rumor “still speculation.”
