What’s not to like about Gloominous Doom? Granted, if you aren’t a Coldplay fan, these Shredding, Penn., metal merchants will cause you pain. But if you like Coldplay, you deserve to live a life of pain anyway. And causing Coldplay fans pain is only a small part of the group’s greatness. Brutal and unrelenting, there’s a distinct melodic undercurrent to the group’s blitzkrieg bombardments that sets it apart from the sullen pack of post-Slayer, paint-by-numbers thrashers out there. If you have an affinity for tongue-in-cheek humor in your metal, Gloominous Doom could very well be your next favorite band. It brings its cheap booze-fueled blasts of sweet, sweet hate to Wonderland, 1721 E. Main St., on Friday, Aug. 23. Front Royal’s Kill the Car and Richmond’s Mensrea open. Doors for the 18-and-older show are at 9 p.m. $5.
