Anything male-led bands can do, female-led bands can do better. Girls Rock RVA, a local organization that empowers young girls through music, proves it with a benefit show at the Republic featuring performances from all-female-fronted local bands, including Cardinal Compass, the Kindling Kind and Anousheh. Girls Rock RVA creates day camps where girls ages 8-13 learn how to play musical instruments, form bands, write songs and perform, all in one week. Girls Rock has reinvigorated the creative drives of female youth throughout Richmond in the last year through organizing workshops, instrument drives, concerts and other events. Proceeds from this show go toward continuing that work. The Girls Rock RVA benefit show takes place at the Republic on Friday, Jan. 11, at 9 p.m. $5. girlsrockrva.wordpress.com.
