On at least one occasion, Franz Liszt, rock-star pianist of the mid-1800s, rolled out of bed at 11:30 for a noon concert, having nearly gotten himself into a 2 a.m. duel after losing a drinking contest the night before. More notably from a musical perspective, he was the first pianist to perform full concerts featuring music solely composed or arranged by himself. Pianists around the world have been celebrating the anniversary of his October 1811 birth with Liszt concerts, and the formidable Garrick Ohlsson is no exception. The first American-born winner of the prestigious Chopin International Piano Competition in 1970, Ohlsson is known for his commanding skill and huge repertoire. Hear him play works from somewhat later in Liszt’s life, including the über-romantic Sonata in B Minor, at the University of Richmond’s Modlin Center on Wednesday, Jan. 18, at 7:30 p.m. $20-40. 289-8980.
