Funky Precedent

Like soul empress Sharon Jones and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Souler Coaster vocalist Monica Jackson is surrounded by white guys who know how to get the job done. The Coaster is a time-warp cover band playing typical funk favorites from yesterday along with more surprising revisits, such as Steely Dan's "Peg." While some cover bands are the kind of thing you might see at your next mandatory workplace retreat, the conviction and ability of this nine-piece band are above question, just like our vice president. Souler Coaster plays Friday, Jan. 11, at 9:30 p.m. at the Capital Ale House. $6. 780-ALES.
