Fool’s Errand is no fool. It’s everything-but-the-kitchen-sink approach to collective melodious expression works because its members listen to one another. In the hands of idiots, their credo would be a circular firing squad with each well-intentioned buffoon canceling out another. But this merry band of self-proclaimed imbeciles thankfully takes the ambitious chore at hand and streamlines it into an easily digestible sound. Led into battle by singer and guitarist Tristan Dougherty, the team-first mentality is evident on the slyly intoxicating tune, “Dirty Fingernails,” which comes across like the Magnetic Fields playing ethnic music with Tom Waits nursing a hangover. Meditative, moody and expansive, the band creates soundtracks to movies that haven’t been made yet. If all fools sounded this good, this world would be a much better place. Fool’s Errand plays Thursday, Sept 12, at Weezie’s Kitchen. Doors open at 10 p.m. Admission is free. weezieskitchen.com. — Chris Bopst
