Finally, a Play About Hygiene

Whereas Vincent Van Gogh cut off his ear and gave it to a prostitute for safekeeping; whereas Salvador Dali said he was receiving messages from space through his moustache; therefore, 19th-century French painter Pierre Bonnard appears the image of mental health for creating 400 paintings of his wife taking a bath — effectively keeping voyeurism in the home, where it belongs. Just why he did this is the subject of "The Secret of Mme. Bonnard's Bath," the play by Israel Horovitz opening at the Firehouse Theatre Project Thursday, Nov. 2, at 8 p.m. Whatever secrets the good lady Bonnard kept under her rubber duck slip like a bar of soap through three time periods and the multiple incarnations of Rusty Wilson, Scott Wichmann and Jennifer Massey, each moving through a world bordered by love and obsession.
