Slow summer days in Richmond are coming to a close. Downtown streets and parking spaces soon will be filled with the bright-eyed and bushytailed, who are tanned, rested and ready to go deep into debt in order to get an education. To welcome the returning herd, Strange Matter and the Camel are teaming up for Welcome Week Fest, a two-day local band showcase Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 15 and 16. A smorgasbord of home-team talent will play the inaugural showcase that features performances by Lucy in Battle Armor, Grave Hookers, Hot Dolphin, Ashes, Headless Mantis, Camp Howard and many others rooted in Richmond rock-based releases. The marathon sampling sessions begin each day at 5 p.m. Tickets for the 18-and-older shows are $5. Check strangematterrva.com or thecamel.org.
