Don Carlos Barrios explains why the end is near at the Aquarian Bookstore

We all have our own ideas about how the world's going to end and what humanity's ultimate destiny will be. Whether it'll be a holy reunion with the great divine or a good old-fashioned cataclysmic cleansing, civilization's obsession with its own conclusion is so widespread there's a term for it: eschatology. Besides giving “The Day After Tomorrow” director Roland Emmerich an excuse to once again destroy recognizable landmarks on film, the most topical doomsday interpretation of late has been the prophecy of the Mayan calendar, predicting that some worldwide event will take place in the year 2012. Looking to shed some native expertise on the subject, the Aquarian Bookshop in Carytown holds an educational lecture by Don Carlos Barrios, a historian, anthropologist and researcher taught by traditional Mayan elders, on Friday, Sept. 18, 5-7 p.m. Registration required. $45. 353-5575. - Mike Hilleary
