D.L. Hughley at the Richmond Funny Bone

Since his breakout appearance alongside Bernie Mac, Steve Harvey and Cedric the Entertainer in Spike Lee's 2000 stand-up comedy film, “The Original Kings of Comedy,” D.L. Hughley has had to be unafraid to take risks among people who are unafraid to take risks. Most recently it's his own CNN show, “D.L. Hughley Break the News,” in which Hughley's observations of African-American culture make ample use of his free speech. While the comedy-news experiment proved short-lived (though Hughley is still working for CNN as an Los Angeles-based contributor), it's merely given the man another opportunity to get back on the stand-up stage before he makes his next move. Hughley performs at the Richmond Funny Bone on Friday, July 17, through Sunday, July 19. $27. 521-8900. — Mike Hilleary
