Dinosaur Jr. at the National

It's hard to miss the influence of Dinosaur Jr. when listening to the alternative rock albums of the early '90s. Together with its contemporaries, the Pixies, Dinosaur Jr. crafted songs relying heavily on a mix of guitar-driven feedback, distortion and melodic solos, a style Kurt Cobain and Nirvana openly admitted as an influence on their own work. With internal tensions leading to various line-up changes over the years, the original trio — J. Mascis, Lou Barlow and Emmett Murphy — find themselves together once again and on the road pre-empting the release of a new album set to hit store shelves in early summer. Watch them play the National with Mike Watt and the Missingmen on Thursday, April 30, at 7 p.m. $20-$23. 612-1900 or www.thenationalva.com. — Mike Hilleary
