Deeds vs. McDonnell

Gubernatorial candidates set fourth debate; Bolling, Wagner plan to meet.

The two candidates for governor have agreed to meet for another face-to-face matchup, a debate in Roanoke that's likely to be their final one before Election Day.

Democrat Creigh Deeds and Republican Bob McDonnell will square off Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. at Roanoke College's Olin Theater. The debate is sponsored by television station WSLS, the NBC affiliate in Roanoke. The format is yet to be finalized, but anchor Jay Warren and political analyst Robert E. Denton Jr. of Virginia Tech will pose questions.

The debate is the fourth to which the candidates have agreed after much public bickering between the campaigns. There seems to be little traction on other proposed debates before Nov. 3.

A day before the Roanoke debate, the candidates for lieutenant governor — incumbent Republican Bill Bolling and Democrat Jody Wagner — are scheduled to meet in the same arena for a debate sponsored by the Virginia Bar Association's Young Lawyers Division, presented with WSLS and Roanoke College.

The Oct. 19 debate, set for 7 p.m., is open to the public, though the ticketing process is still being considered. Like the gubernatorial debate the following day, VirginiaTalks.com (a project of Style Weekly) is scheduled to air the debate online.

In the governor's race, what was billed as a forum was to be held Sept. 22 at Coburn Hall on the campus of Virginia Union University, led by Radio One, VUU and other civic groups. Candidates were to answer questions submitted online.

Deeds and McDonnell will also debate on Oct. 12 in Richmond. It will be televised statewide, produced by WCVE and CBS 6, and sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Virginia and AARP Virginia.
