David Copperfield uses his illusions at the Carpenter Theatre

While there are those people who still enjoy works of illusion and magic on a smaller scale — the kind relying on skilled sleight of hand and befuddling visual tricks a la Carytown's resident magician John Smallie — apparently the only way to make millions in the profession is to be as theatrical and over-the-top as possible. With plenty of pyrotechnics, cleverly designed sets and distractingly hot assistants, David Copperfield has developed his unique form of entertainment, becoming the most commercially successful magician in history. After some of his greatest tricks, including the disappearance of the Statue of Liberty, walking through the Great Wall of China and getting engaged to supermodel Claudia Schiffer, Copperfield performs at the Carpenter Theatre at CenterStage on Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. $40-$60. 800-745-3000. — Mike Hilleary
