While he may have been able to let go of his Pedro the Lion moniker, songwriter David Bazan has had little interest in shaking off his music's heartfelt religious overtones with his first proper solo album, “Curse Your Branches.” With his deadpan delivery and thoughtful narratives, Bazan opts out of preaching, preferring to grapple with faith and challenge its worth with a mixture of cheeky wit and matter-of-fact directness. Whether opening with references to the Garden of Eden and the “poison fruit” or merely attempting to explain religion to his children with the track “Bearing Witness,” Bazan may wallow in his own doubts and anxieties, but they produce cathartic revelations. Performing with openers Headlights, Bazan is scheduled to play Alley Katz on Saturday, March 20, at 9 p.m., $14.
