Comedian Interview Was Trashy, Tasteless
Your readers deserve an apology and your reputation and responsibility to the Richmond community that you serve dictates that you do better in the future by publishing a magazine that is informative, insightful and fit for all to read.
The interview with Doug Stanhope (“Bad Seed,” Arts & Culture,” Aug. 12) was irresponsible, unnecessarily obscene and uncharacteristic of the work you usually do. I found it offensive and I'm willing to bet that a majority your readers did as well.
Young people, anyone slightly conservative, church-going folks, people with decent manners, all look to you for information and reports about what is going on in our city, not profane words and phrases and offensive verbal imagery — you could at least have bleeped them out!
If anyone likes and wants to read that kind of junk there are other local publications available to them. How about visitors to our city? What do you suppose they think when they pick up our local news and entertainment directory and are exposed to this kind of reporting?
I would only hope this was some sort of blatant error in the editing process in which case someone should be held responsible. Style Weekly has an obligation to its readers to make sure this type of reporting does not appear in future articles. A promise of that, beginning with the aforementioned apology, would be a good start. You are a valuable, respected publication in this city. We certainly don't want to lose you — don't be careless and lose us!
