Singer and songwriter Chris Ayer supposedly penned the songs on his latest release, “Don't Go Back to Sleep” about the moments that shook him out of an autopiloted existence. But that's not to say his soothing, melodic songs don't make a nice backdrop for cruising along. With three self-released albums to his credit, and an award from the 2006 John Lennon Songwriting Competition, Ayer fools you into relaxing into the very stupor his songs warn against. He performs with John Callaway at Capital Ale House on Friday, July 24, at 8 p.m. Show up early for a chance to take home a free preview CD. $6. 780-2537. — Laura Robertson
