Burlesque and Beer

The Bindlestiff Family Cirkus has been peddling its variety show up and down the East Coast all summer, and you can put aside your fear of clowns — the half-naked women are far more intimidating. The 12-year-old Cirkus is vaudeville at its finest. Expect trapeze acrobatics, racy burlesque, live music and more. Other attractions include the sword-swallowing Mr. Pennygaff and reverse organist Frederik Iversen, not to mention Mistress Philomena — expert with the bullwhip and fire-eater extraordinaire. Tour sponsor Magic Hat Brewing Co. only adds to the fun, as attendees are invited to compete in a beer-drinking competition onstage. Magic Hat is also holding a contest for a weekend in Philadelphia to catch the variety show finale. The Bindlestiff Family Cirkus is performing at Sycamore Rouge in Petersburg with adult shows Friday and Saturday, July 6-7, at 8 p.m., in addition to a children's performance July 7at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10-$12. Call 957-5707 or visit www.sycamorerouge.org. — S.M.
