After years away from the music business, is Richmond's own Grammy award winning R&B singer D'Angelo preparing to make a comeback?
D'Angelo concert dates have been announced on the web sites for various European venues and some of these shows have already sold out. But the reclusive and troubled singer, who hasn't released an album in more than a decade, is known for keeping his fans waiting.
“We are all hopeful this going to happen,”” says D'Angelo's longtime manager Lindsay Guion, when asked about the scheduled shows. “That is something that is being worked on now, for him to try to do those shows.”
While there may reason for guarded optimism about a comeback, there are still some things that need to fall into place before any of these curtains rise. As of now, a band is still being put together and a date hasn't been set for rehearsals, for a tour that starts Jan. 26. Guion acknowledges that other tour plans, including a deal with the California-based promoter LiveNation, has fallen through over the years.
The Richmond native, born Michael Eugene Archer, may have other business to attend to. The only official Web presence for the singer, a Myspace page that was last updated in October, doesn't mention any upcoming shows. His artist page at RCA records is mostly blank, save for a link to the Myspace page and the words “coming soon” in small print.
A slightly larger problem is that a source close to D'Angelo says Guion isn't even the singer's current manager.
“I can't comment on that right now,” Guion says, citing client confidentiality.
Guion did confirm that the singer's management team now includes Kevin Lilies, the former record label executive who manages Petersburg native and R&B upstart Trey Songz. He remains optimistic that the singer will complete the just-announced tour, which starts in Stockholm, Sweden, and ends in London, with stops in Paris and Amsterdam.
“Believe it when you see it,” Guion says. “I think God is the only person that knows right now.”
