Big Lo

Like rock ’n’ roll, hip-hop is here to stay. Since its birth in New York in the late ’70s, hip-hop has seen every subsequent generation make the genre its own. On Thursday, April 9, the latest incorporation of American-born rhythm and rhyme will be on display when the Big Lo Umbrellas and Green Olives Tour takes the stage at Strange Matter. The Spanish-American emcee, promoter and rapper from Pensacola, Florida, is bringing the two turntables and a microphone sound of up-and-coming yarn-spinners the Sandman, BCMusic1st, Helladonna, Gritty City, Yohannes, Royale and Sik-1 to town for a night of cross-cultural boom-boxing. The sound Big Lo makes recalls the sample-heavy beats and militant lyricism of the Wu-Tang Clan and Boot Camp Clik. And his timing, diction and wit gives ample reasons to lend him your ears. Doors open at 9 p.m. Admission is $5-$10.
