Better Spent on Beggars Than War in Iraq

Isn't it strange? I support beggars; they are upfront and to the point ("The Guilt of Giving," Back Page, Nov. 14). I know where my one dollar is going -- a can of beer, a pack of cigarettes, OK.

What I don't support and what people never seem to have the courage to talk about are the billions of dollars unaccounted for in Iraq that came out of their pockets through income tax. That seems to be OK with everyone, but let some beggar (who, by the way, St. Francis of Assisi hung out with in Rome, not to mention Jesus and his pals) ask for some change or a buck, and everyone goes into some kind of moral wilderness.

Like I always say, "Everyone's a Christian until they have to be."
