My favorite spots are those that are tough to reach without a paddle — natural wonders that can make you forget that you’re in the middle of the city.
1. The serene area around the Choo Choo Rapids and the majestically arched Atlantic Coast Line Bridge.
2. Williams Island, the tree-covered gem across from Pony Pasture and Riverside Drive.
3. A challenging paddle upriver from Huguenot Flatwater will get you to Bosher’s Dam, where you can see the blue heron rookery.
4. Finally, one you don’t need a kayak to experience. I love the sound and sheer power of the water as it roars through Pipeline Rapids in downtown Richmond.
